Meet the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance

Around 60 people braved snowstorms in the Cortez/Dolores area of southwestern Colorado on Saturday for the first organizational meeting of the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance.  The group’s mission states that they, “support the missions of the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and the Anasazi Heritage Center through financial and volunteer resources.  Our mission focuses on the preservation of the irreplaceable cultural and natural landscape through education and research. We foster communications with local, tribal and national communities.”

The Alliance has a steering committee that put on a great program Saturday at the Ansazi Heritage Center, with presentations on a broad array of issues facing the monument and the museum: curation, cultural and paleontological resources, interpretation and education, recreation and wilderness and natural resources.

Keep an eye out for more news soon as this group interviews for its Board of Directors, and sets a programmatic agenda.  If you’d like to be involved, contact them at southwestcoloradocanyons@gmail.com.

Marty Costos, Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance steering team member, and Bridget Ambler, curator at the Anasazi Heritage Center, discuss resource challenges and opportunities.
