The Conservation Lands Foundation (CLF) is a national non-profit organization headquartered in Durango, Colorado with offices in San Francisco, Albuquerque, Bozeman, Las Cruces, Joshua Tree, and Washington, DC. The Conservation Lands Foundation was established in 2007 to protect the premier lands, rivers and trails under the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) jurisdiction – specifically the 35+ million acres and 2,400 miles of National Monuments and National Conservation Areas, Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers and National Scenic and Historic Trails that make up our National Conservation Lands.

Our mission is to protect, restore and expand the National Conservation Lands through education, advocacy and partnerships.


The Senior Director for Development is part of CLF’s senior leadership team and works collaboratively with the Board of Directors, Executive Director and colleagues to develop and implement fundraising strategies to achieve annual income and programmatic goals. The Senior Director for Development supervises and mentors the Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving, Director of Major Gifts (new position) and Associate Director for Development.

The ideal candidate is an experienced fundraiser with a proven record of accomplishment managing successful campaigns, cultivating relationships with donors, securing major gifts from foundations and individuals, and managing a high performing team. The candidate is committed to CLF’s mission, is a dynamic leader and emotionally intelligent. The candidate has outstanding written and oral communications skills, financial capabilities, and possesses an outlook that draws in and inspires others to support CLF’s goals.


  • Lead the development team in creating and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan to achieve annual income and programmatic goals; Monitor and interpret performance and trends and adapt plan when necessary.
  • Work with senior leaders and the development team to develop and adhere to annual organizational budget; Maintain CLF’s financial health and superior ratings with charity rating organizations.
  • Support the Board’s engagement in fundraising efforts; Manage the Board-led Fundraising Committee and work with members to establish monthly goals and action plans.
  • Oversee Foundation and Corporate Giving program; Align funding opportunities with CLF’s mission; Open doors to prospective funders and strengthen relationships with current funders and program officers; Provide strategic guidance and oversight in the development of grant proposals, reports and project budgets.
  • Oversee Major Gifts program; Manage a portfolio of top major donors; Work with Major Gifts Director and other solicitors (including program staff, the Executive Director and Board members) to identify, cultivate, steward and solicit gifts from major donors.
  • Work with development team to execute special events and multi-day field trips to build and cultivate relationships with current and prospective major donors.
  • Work with development team to grow CLF’s base of support from individuals using traditional and trending forms of donor prospecting and engagement.
  • Develop deep understanding of CLF’s program goals and strategies and keep donors informed of opportunities, progress and accomplishments.
  • Oversee database management including data imports, exports, reports and analysis; Ensure team members use the database to manage donor relationships in an accurate, timely and thorough manner.
  • Work with development team to conduct donor research and explore new donor markets.
  • Oversee the development of collateral materials including CLF’s Annual reports, brochures, one-sheets andinvitations.
  • Identify opportunities for life-income, bequest, and complex gifts and begin to build the foundation for CLF’s Planned Giving program.
  • Work with team members to implement CLF’s equity, inclusion and diversity plan.
  • Supervise direct reports; Provide support needed for staff to execute their responsibilities effectively, includingcoaching and promotion of professional development; Promote a strong team ethic and retain top talent.
  • Uphold CLF’s Donor Bill of Rights.
  • Participate in team meetings, Board meetings and Friends Rendezvous and serve as fundraising resource to Board members, donors, team members and partners.Qualifications:

    The successful candidate will be committed to CLF’s mission and will have proven leadership, fundraising and management experience. Qualifications include:

    • Proven record of success cultivating, closing, administering and stewarding major gifts from foundations and individuals.
    • Experience providing strategic direction, leadership and management of fundraising activities resulting in growth of income and donor base.
    • Management experience and administrative skills to organize, direct and motivate staff and volunteers.
    • Strong organizational, time management and analytical skills to establish strategic fundraising goals and report
      on results.
    • Demonstrated experience with budget preparation, planning and resource management.
    • Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment; high capacity to inspire cooperation and work well with teams.
    • Ability to make decisions, resolve problems and work in a complex environment with the ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Experience handling confidential information appropriately.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to articulate CLF’s goals andstrategies clearly.
  • Ability to travel frequently and work weekends and evenings when necessary.
